Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products: What We Use at Tidy Tribe

When we started Tidy Tribe Cleaning, one of our earliest and most deliberate decisions was to go fully eco-friendly with our cleaning product line. It was not the path of least resistance, genuinely effective green cleaning products cost more than conventional chemical alternatives, and there was a learning curve in finding formulas that truly perform at a professional level. But after working with Calgary families, seeing the children and pets who live in the homes we clean, and understanding the environmental impact of conventional cleaning chemicals, we knew it was the right choice. This post explains exactly what we use, why we chose it, and what it means for your home and family.

Why Conventional Cleaning Products Are Problematic

Many household cleaning products, even well-known grocery store brands, contain a mix of chemicals that raise legitimate health and environmental concerns. Ammonia and bleach, when combined or used in poorly ventilated spaces, create toxic fumes. Phthalates, commonly used in fragranced cleaning products, are endocrine disruptors linked to hormonal issues. Triclosan, found in some antibacterial products, has been associated with antibiotic resistance and environmental contamination. Phosphates contribute to water body eutrophication, a serious issue for Alberta's river systems.

In a professional cleaning context, our team members are exposed to these products for hours every single day. The homes we clean contain children, pets, elderly family members, and people with respiratory conditions, allergies, and chemical sensitivities. Using harsh chemical cleaners simply is not consistent with the kind of service we want to provide.

Our Product Standards at Tidy Tribe

Every product we use meets all of the following criteria:

  • Health Canada approved: Meets all Canadian regulatory requirements for safety and efficacy.
  • Biodegradable formula: Breaks down naturally without leaving persistent chemical residues in the environment.
  • Free from chlorine bleach: We avoid bleach-based products in favour of effective oxygen-based and enzyme-based alternatives.
  • Free from synthetic fragrances: All our products are either fragrance-free or scented with natural essential oils only. Fragrance-free options are available for any client on request.
  • Free from phthalates, parabens, and triclosan.
  • Not tested on animals.
  • Concentrated formulas: We use concentrated products diluted on-site to reduce plastic waste and packaging.

What We Use in Each Area of Your Home

Kitchen surfaces and appliances: We use a plant-derived, pH-balanced all-purpose cleaner for countertops, appliance exteriors, and cabinet fronts. For heavy kitchen grease (oven interiors, range hoods), we use a citrus-based degreaser that cuts through baked-on buildup without caustic chemicals or strong fumes.

Bathrooms: For toilets and grout, we use a non-toxic, naturally acidic bathroom cleaner that dissolves soap scum, limescale, and hard water deposits effectively. It is the area where clients are most skeptical that a green product can match the performance of bleach-based cleaners, and it is the area where we most consistently impress. Our bathroom cleaner is certified to eliminate 99.9% of common household pathogens.

Floors: Hard floors are cleaned with a diluted plant-based floor cleaner appropriate for the floor type (separate formulas for hardwood/engineered wood versus tile versus vinyl). We never use products that leave a waxy residue or dulling film.

Glass and mirrors: We use a streak-free, ammonia-free glass cleaner. No more chemical smell lingering in your bathroom after a clean.

Disinfection: For high-touch surfaces (door handles, light switches, faucets), we use an EPA-registered, Health Canada-approved disinfectant that is effective against bacteria and enveloped viruses without chlorine or quaternary ammonium compounds.

What About Performance? Do Green Products Actually Work?

This is the question we get most often from new Calgary clients who are used to conventional cleaning products. The honest answer: yes, with the right formulas and application technique, eco-friendly products perform at the same level as conventional alternatives for virtually all household cleaning tasks. The only exception is extreme situations, deeply neglected ovens, heavily stained grout that has not been addressed in years, where we may need to use more time and mechanical scrubbing to compensate for the absence of caustic chemistry. We consider that a worthwhile trade-off.

Is Eco-Friendly Cleaning More Expensive?

At Tidy Tribe, eco-friendly products are standard, not an upgrade, not an add-on, not a premium tier. Every single service we provide, from a basic recurring residential clean to a full post-construction detail, uses our full eco-friendly product line at no additional charge. We absorbed the higher product cost into our pricing model from the beginning because we believe responsible cleaning should be the default for a Calgary cleaning company, not a premium customers have to ask and pay for.

If you have specific product sensitivities or requests, fully fragrance-free, for example, or a preference to avoid a particular ingredient, just let us know at booking and we will accommodate you. Your family's health and safety come first. Book your eco-friendly clean in Calgary today.
